Roger Barr, Painter, Sculptor, Draftsman
Roger Barr (1921-2000) was a leader among the artists who emerged after WWII. And while his fame as a sculptor may be his finest attribute, his ingenuity and unmatched skills as a conceiver of form and atmosphere and his supportive influence upon the scores of students who studied with him at his many teaching venues are his significant legacy. He was a legendary artist, one that you only read about; he was the real thing, Born in 1921 in Milwaukee, Barr studied and taught art in Wisconsin, New Mexico, Los Angeles, Paris, San Francisco, Hayward and Santa Rosa. He was a flier in the Navy during World War II and spent part of the war as flight deck officer on the USS Fanshaw Bay. After the war, he studied art in Los Angeles and then in Paris, where he lived and worked on the east bank of the Seine and moved in the same circles with Pablo Picasso and photographer Man Ray. He was director of the American Art Study Abroad in Paris from 1959-69. He was also a professor at American College in Paris in the early 1960s. Married for 25 years to printmaker Elizabeth Quandt, he spent those years in Santa Rosa, CA, teaching, sculpting and painting. His final years were spent in the desert city of La Quinta, CA. This book chronicles his life, describes his achievements and contains detailed information about the work in the collection of Jack Leissring.
